Subliminal Ads on the Brain

Posted by The Situationist Staff on March 13, 2007

brain-scans-subliminal.jpggrown-man-cry.jpgWith the aid of brain scanners, researchers at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College, London recently showed that the brain does register subliminal images even if a person is unaware they have seen them – although the images only had an impact when the brain had “spare capacity” in terms of attention.

According to Dr. Bahador Bahrami, one of the researchers, “[w]hat’s interesting here is that your brain does log things that you aren’t even aware of and can’t ever become aware of.” For short articles describing the research, click here and here.

Here’s an example;take the world famous Virgin logo.If you turn it slighty to the left so that where the underline and tail of the g form an X,you’ll also notice the V forms a slightly hidden S and the i,r and part of the g form a broken capital E,spelling the word SEX.
So you have Sex/Virgin in one word.Very clever Mr.Branson.

I was reading Wilson Bryan Keys’ book “The Age of Manipulation” and read his Crown Royal Whiskey ad analysis, but I thought that there must be more to it than that.As I looked it became apparent to me exactly what the main theme of the ad {subliminaly} was.
This is what I found; down at the bottom of the ad above the word “Have” appears to be a hooded figure (grim reaper) holding a sythe {he has two eyes,a nostril and mouth-a bit skull looking the face is},he represents imminent death to many in the west.If you follow the swing of his sythe which looks like it follows the arch of the broken bottle you will see that it passes through a white figure that looks like a screaming man holding his arms up above his head,he looks similar to Munch’s figure in the painting “The Scream”,but he is on his side almost falling. The sythe appears to have cut him in half just above his genital region, probably why he is screaming in pain and horror (castration)(and what’s that sausage shape appearing to fly off his mid-region,by the way?).The puddle of alcohol could also double as his blood and inards slattered over the floor.
Just under the label is a white triangular face which looks like a clown / joker face looking with a broad laughing smile at the poor man being cut in half (humiliation),he is just to the left underside of the 750ml on the label. The reaper also merges with a ravens head with the beak pionting at the crying man.
I’m sure there is more to be found, but that seams to be the main subliminal painted into the artwork.

On the Crown Royal ad (click on the image at the top of this page), I see what Darren sees and also: the word SEX is easily found on the left side, center of page.
