Animals act on instinct. I can make the choice to not eat that extra cookie or keep my pants up instead of having a one night stand. It is necessary to be successful in life. One of the reasons our economy is in the mess it’s in is because of people’s lack of self control regarding money and credit cards. Our government doesn’t know the meaning of self control when it comes to overspending. When people learn to say NO, things will get better.

They pioneered the idea that self-control (or willpower) is a limited resource like physical strength. Using it on one task depletes it for other tasks, though practicing using it strengthens it (like muscles).
