Americans love a scandal. Well, so do the English and the French. But Americans follow the British journalistic model of expousing sexual indiscretions, and the French don’t find sexual indiscretions anything other than banal. President Mitterand, after all, had a love-child, and at his funeral, his wife, mistress, and love child all walked in the same parade. Which is better? Ruing families and lives, or concentrating on the fundamentals of politics?
