If these kids are really focused on maintaining image, then their behaviour is extraordinarily badly-adjusted. In my (entirely anecdotal experience, based on reactions to me, and others) people seems to judge “intelligence” or “goodness” based on the number of successes, rather than the proportion, and even magnitude of success seems to be a secondary factor.

If I’m right, their teachers would think they were smarter if they tried to answer every single question.
